Vacationing pregnant woman fatally crushed after boulder falls on her partner’s car

A woman and her unborn child were crushed after a large boulder fell on the car of her partner, according to rescue workers in France.
The seven months pregnant woman was crushed after the 880 pound rock fell on the car.

The woman, Karine Vocant , died instantly.
Her 46-year-old partner Patrick Marchand was driving the car, but was not injured. The couple was expecting their first child.
Marchand’s mother, Marie-Therese Marchand, said that Karine and Patrick knew each other for six years. They were having their first child together and Patrick was overjoyed.
The tragedy occurred in Pyrenees, near the French-Spanish border.
When rescue workers arrived, they desperately tried to save the pregnant woman and the fetus, but were unsuccessful.
An investigation has begun by the French authorities as to why the huge rock fell.
"For some inexplicable reason, the rock became loose and it fell. Locals have asked an expert to visit the site to find out why and see if there is a risk that others might fall," a police spokesperson said in a statement.
There is no safety nets along the mountainous route to prevent such tragedies from happening.
